Newlyn Bay, Cornwall

After the Mayflower had departed from Plymouth on 16 September 1620, it is thought the ship weighed anchor in England for a final time. This stop was Old Newlyn Bay in Cornwall.

The passengers on board the Mayflower realised that the barrels of water they had taken on board to see them through their journey were contaminated. A plaque on the quay reads: To the memory of Bill Best Harris 1914 – 1987 Historian and son of Plymouth whose researches indicated that the MAYFLOWER 16 – 8 – 1620 docked at the Old Quay Newlyn for water and supplies making it the last port of call in England The water supply at Plymouth being the cause of fever and cholera in the city Let debate begin'.

Newlyn in the Southern most town in Britain, close to Penzance and the largest fishing port in England. You can still see the Old Quay today and visit the harbour area. The town hosts an annual Fish Festival.
